Mane's return could jeopardise Bafana's World Cup dream
When Liverpool confirmed that Sadio Mane had sustained a thigh injury on international duty and would be sidelined for a six weeks, the news were met with jubilation in South Africa. What that meant was he would miss the two crucial qualifiers against Bafana Bafana. Bafana Bafana require nothing less than maximum points in both games in order to book a spot in Russia next year.
In a surprise twist Jurgen Klopp announced two days before the fixture against West Ham United on Saturday that Mane could feature in that fixture. Feature he did and excelled, announcing his return with two assists in the Reds demolition of the Hammers. His recovery was two weeks ahead of what the medical team at Anfield had anticipated.
Negotiations are still going on between club and country with regards his participation in the upcoming qualifiers as his coach is not convinced he is 100% fit. Senegal are unlikely to relent. Although the diminutive winger has often failed to replicate his scintillating domestic football form in national colours, it would have still been better to take on the Lions of Terranga without him.
