Portugal's Whopping European Championship Bonuses Revealed
Captain Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal recently became European champions, and it has now been revealed how much each player received as a bonus for this massive achievement.
According to AS, every Portuguese player pocketed a whopping €275 000 (R4.4 million) for lifting the trophy in France.
In addition, they also received other expense allowances during the tournament to take their overall bonus payment to €300 000 (R5.25 million) a player.
This means, overall, the Portuguese FA has splashed out €6.9 million (R110 million) for the 23 players in manager Fernando Santos' squad.
The massive bonuses were apparently negotiated between the captains around Ronaldo and the Portuguese Football Federation ahead of Euro 2016.
Portugal won its first major international title after beating France 1-0 in extra-time, courtesy of a goal by Guinea Bissau-born Eder.
Ronaldo and company replaced Spain, who won the tournament in 2008 and 2012, as the reigning Euro champions, and will represent UEFA at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.
