Wasteful 'Downs Drop Points At Loftus

Absa Premiership Full-Time Report, Mamelodi Sundowns 0-0 Polokwane City

By Soccer Laduma - Mar 14, 2017 09:21 PM
Absa Premiership

Result: Sundowns 0-0 Polokwane

Date: 14 March 2017

Venue: Loftus Versveld Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns stretched their winless streak to three games in the Absa Premiership when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Polokwane City at the Loftus Versveld Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Masandawana enjoyed the first opportunity of the game in the fifth minute after a great passing move involving Lucky Mohomi and Leonardo Castro resulted in the Columbian cutting back the ball to Sibusiso Vilakazi in the area, but Vila's effort went straight into the palms of George Chigova.

The home side started to find their rhythm and gradually created more opportunities, with Percy Tau's 10th  minute header going wide of the target.

Polokwane had their first effort at goal in the 12th minute when Lucky Mohomi was dispossessed in the midfield, but Walter Musona's long range effort failed to test Kennedy Mweene.

Fares Hachi did well to evade his marker and provided Castro with an enticing ball in the area, but forward's header failed to test Chigova.

Chigova came to his sides rescue in the 24th minute when he held out Tau's effort after some great work down the right by Castro. a

Castro again proved instrumental minutes later when he did well find Themba Zwane on the right hand side and the winger managed to put in a low cross from the byline, but there was nobody home in the Polokwane six-yard area much to the dismay of Pitso Mosimane.

Sundowns were forced into an early change when Vilakazi called for a substitution after going down in the 40th minute, which prompted the introduction of Anthony Laffor.

The home side created further opportunities, but failed to break the deadlock as their wastefulness continued.

Rendani Ndou was forced off through injury early in the second-half and was replaced by Sipho Jembula.

Polokwane gave a much better account of themselves in the second stanza and put Sundowns on the back foot on a few occasions but were let down by some poor finishing.

Mosimane opted for the introduction of Teko Modise in place of Mohomi as the reigning league champions went search of the opener.

Musona came agonisngly close to having broken the deadlock in the 61st minute, when he brilliantly turned Ricardo Nascimento and Bangaly Soumahoro, but Mweene was equal to the task as he kept out the forward's side-footed finish.

The Brazilians opted for the final roll of the dice when Yannick Zakri was introduced for Castro. The home side grew increasingly frustrated and were reduced to long-range efforts as Polokwane grew in confidence.

Tau wasted arguably the best opportunity of the game in the 79th minute when Laffor did well the evade the attention of two defenders before playing Tau, but the forward's effort wss hit straight at the goalkeeper.

Sundowns threw numbers forward and Hlompho Kekana almost headed Modise's well-delivered ball into the area, but the Masandawana captain's effort was narrowly wide of the target.

The home side were unable to find the breakthrough and extended their winless streak to three consecutive games in the league.

Here's how they line up:

Sundowns: 1. Mweene, 3.Hachi, 15. Mohomi (Modise 54'), 16. Nascimento, 29. Soumahoro, 20. Ngcongca, 11. Vilakazi (Laffor 42'), 25. Castro (Zakri 70'), 18. Zwane, 8.Kekana (C), 22. Tau.

Polokwane: 1. Chigova, 2. Semenya, 4. Tshilo, 8. Maluleke,14. Manaka,16. Mngomezulu (Segolela 82'),15. Klaas, 20.Phiri, 22. Mbonani, 29. Musona (Kanyenda), 19. Ndou (Jembula).

I want them to loose at least 3 games then they must forget about winning the league but they are a very tough team to play against. They are very organized but I think they will struggle to repeat the success they had last season because they will be tired believe me.
