Orlando Pirates' top eight hopes took another dent, after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Ajax Cape Town on Wednesday evening.

The Urban Warriors threatened early on with Prince Nxumalo going close with a low effort inside the opening minute, before Kabwe forced Jackson Mabokgwane into a save five minutes later.

Pirates eventually started seeing more of the ball after 10 minutes while the likes of Riyaad Norodien and Issa Sarr tested Ajax's Brandon Petersen.

Oupa Manyisa squandered a golden chance to hand the hosts the lead after 24 minutes, but he blazed over the crossbar from close range.

Thabo Rakhale was proving to be a real threat as the half went on, and he managed to put in a couple teasing crosses, which were not converted by his peers.

The home side ended the half the stronger of the two sides, but were unable to bypass the Ajax defence, who put in a few good last-ditch tackles in the closing stages.

The Urban Warriors had their first real chance at goal after 54 minutes when the ball fell for Roscoe Pietersen, who blazed over from close range.

Petersen then came to Ajax's rescue four minutes later as he produced a fine save to keep out Marc Van Heerden's powerful effort from distance.

Kjell Jonevret opted for a double change in the 59th minute as Gift Motupa and Thamsanqa Gabuza replaced Dove Wome and Tendai Ndoro.

With the sides still struggling, Stanley Menzo opted for a change of his own after 71 minutes as Lebohang Mokoena repalced Bantu Mzwakali.

Both sides pushed for a winning goal and the visitors also threw on Nathan Paulse in the closing stages with a top eight spot up for grabs.

Pirates nearly snatched victory in the 90th minute but Petersen produced a superb save to keep out another powerful strike from Van Heerden, as the clash ended goalless.

One thing that will definitely get Jonovret fired is his constant inclusion of Gabuza in the team. All 3 fired coaches at OP had a few things in common; they all played Gabuza, Motupa, Jele and Gcaba. The man is a good coach but he needs to rid the team of the above mentioned players. We do not need to go crazy in the transfer market, we have quality players in the team already: just acquire a solid Goalkeeper, racall Chabalala from Chipa and get a defender and a defensive midfilder

Yha nhe! Its a shame that the biggest team like Pirates just doesn't have players for the very first time in history. Cant wait for next season to see all these goats leave our beautiful bucs they are not worthy to wear that jersey they must be fired, before we come back to the stadiums to support the real players not these useless bunch of the season 2016/17.

No admin, the caption should read "Rats Miss Out On Top 8 Spot" please carefully look at the log and rectify your mistake, Rats can not make the top 8 anymore, done and dusted, also check the goal difference, bye bye Rats and good luck on your bottom 8 knockout

Manyisa and Majority of the usual starting 11 need to leave, they are an embarrassment to the Bucs brand.. Khoza aka Toothless needs to revamp the squad.. I'm ashamed to be a Bucs fan right now.

The team selection has always achilles heel for BUCS. Reliance on Ndoro and Issa, when we have younger and fast players, such as Shitolo, Kutumela and Mkhize. Ndoro has dismally failed and Issa can hardly pass the ball to create chances. Look at how Jali and Hlompho Kekana mark and creates chances makes their teams to tick. It also seems that the coach also does not have ideas or plan B. Same system against all teams. I am beginning to doubt his coaching tactics. At this rate we should kiss NEDBANk good bye
