THE BREAKDOWN: Can Chiefs Afford To Let Gordinho Go?

Lorenzo Gordinho Essential to Chiefs' success?

By Kyle Smith - Jul 16, 2017 01:10 PM @KyleLaduma

After it was revealed that Kaizer Chiefs may be willing to part ways with Lorenzo Gordinho, we take a look at how much he had to offer the team last season and whether it would be wise to allow him to leave.

Official: The Biggest Confirmed PSL Transfers So Far...

In Soccer Laduma issue number 1031, the Siya crew revealed that the Glamour Boys are keen to land Ajax Cape Town’s Mosa Lebusa and would be willing to send Gordinho in the other direction as part of a potential swap deal. However, Gordinho was given three consecutive Player of the Month awards at the club’s awards ceremony for the months of August, September and October last year. Furthermore, he was the most played central defender at Chiefs last season, starting 25 of their 30 league games.

With that said, there are a lot of similarities between Gordinho and his defensive partner, Erick Mathoho, with the former Bloemfontein Celtic man proving to be slightly better in duel situations, winning just less than four per 90 minutes, compared to Gordinho’s three. However, Gordinho was slightly better when it came to defensive actions (tackles, blocks, clearances). Daniel Cardoso, on the other hand, started less than half as many games as his counterparts and appears not to be in Steve Komphela’s first team plans.

Where Gordinho was truly outstanding, however, was in his distribution. Alongside Mathoho, he was joint in eighth place for his pass completion rate of 89.1%. When it came to long passes, Gordinho excelled as well, having found his target 61.8% of the time.

Kaizer Chiefs’ defensive unit was fairly solid last season, having conceded less than a goal per game (28 in 30 games), and Gordinho played a major role in the back four throughout the campaign. Furthermore, it would be very difficult to replace a solid defender that is also good on the ball.

If chiefs management know what they want.so it won't be good to sell Godinho.it's better to buy Lebusa not a swap deal The problem is that kaiser chiefs won't listen to their supporters

We must first allow Teenage Hadebe to prove himself and to also settle down before we can think about Gordinho leaving. But then again we know with the clueless head coach that he may be allowed to leave.
